Spider-Man: Far From Home introduced Mysterio to a much wider audience, including viewers who had not spent much time with Spider-Man’s rogues’ gallery. But the man behind that fishbowl helmet has a long history in the comics.
The video explores who Mysterio is and how he became one of Spider-Man’s enemies. Spoilers follow for Spider-Man: Far From Home, along with major comic-book story developments. If you want to discover the movie’s twists for yourself, come back after watching it.
In the movie’s first half, Mysterio presents himself as a hero from another universe, supposedly trying to stop a disaster caused by the four Elementals. As the story unfolds, his real intentions emerge. His heroic image is a performance, and the villain underneath is much closer to the Mysterio readers know from the comics.
Mysterio’s feud with Spider-Man becomes intensely personal. Quentin Beck, a special-effects expert and movie stuntman, made his debut as Mysterio in The Amazing Spider-Man #13.
Beck’s plan was to make himself look like a hero by turning the public against Spider-Man. He impersonated the wall-crawler and committed crimes, using his technical skills to mimic Spider-Man’s abilities. The deception worked so well that even Peter Parker began wondering whether he was committing the crimes without remembering them.
Eventually, Spider-Man uncovered the trick, defeated Mysterio, and handed him over to the police. That defeat fed Beck’s obsession with getting revenge. His rivalry with Spider-Man would also bring him into the Sinister Six.
Mysterio does not need superpowers to be dangerous. His technical knowledge lets him build convincing illusions and deadly traps. Psychological manipulation is just as important to his attacks: he can make victims doubt what they see and push them toward panic and despair. In that sense, he has something in common with Batman’s Scarecrow, whose toxins turn fear into a weapon.
His tricks have even challenged Matt Murdock, better known as Daredevil. Blindness might seem like protection against a master of visual deception, but Mysterio’s methods reach beyond what someone sees. That makes him a threat to heroes who should, at first glance, seem difficult to fool.
One of his most devastating attacks happens in Old Man Logan. Wolverine believes villains are attacking the mutant school and lashes out to defend his friends. When Mysterio reveals the deception, Logan discovers that the enemies he thought he was fighting were his fellow X-Men. The illusion drove him to kill his own teammates, leaving him emotionally shattered.
