Who Is Ninjara? Umeko’s Story in TMNT Adventures

Ninjara’s journey from Chien Khan’s assassin to the Turtles’ ally, Raphael’s girlfriend, and a life beyond the Archie adventures.

Ninjara, whose personal name is Umeko, was created by writer Stephen Murphy and artist Michael Dooney for the world of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures.

A fox woman known as an exceptional thief, she is also a formidable martial artist and swordswoman. Her stealth and fighting skills let her keep pace with the Turtles, while a fox’s sharp senses and her ability to scale difficult surfaces make her especially resourceful.

Her relationship with Raphael gives the series a chance to let its young heroes grow emotionally along with their readers: first love, incompatibility, and a breakup all become part of his life.

Ninjara’s early story is tied to Chien Khan, a supernatural villain in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures.

The leader of the Dog Star Gang, he is a half-human, half-dog martial artist with a criminal organization that rivals the Foot. His transformation comes from a demonic bargain rather than an ordinary dose of mutagen.

As the human Yoshi Chen, he practices dark magic and calls on Noi Tai Dar when his life is in danger. The demon saves him by merging him with his pit bull, Mauler, in exchange for help entering the earthly realm.

The resulting Chien Khan combines physical strength, swordsmanship, and dark magic. He hides the canine face he resents beneath a samurai-style helmet.

The bargain also gives his criminal plans a supernatural purpose: gathering the power needed to bring his demonic ally into the world.

To do it, he kidnaps Chu Hsi, April’s firefighter boyfriend, who can transform into a powerful dragon warrior.

April and the Turtles follow the trail to Hiroshima, Japan. Chien Khan learns of their arrival and sends his assassin Umeko after them. That is how Ninjara first encounters the brothers.

After their fight, she learns what her employer really intends: use the dragon warrior in a scheme involving a nuclear plant and the energy needed to summon Noi Tai Dar. The intervention of Izanagi and Izanami helps bring that plan to an end.

Disgusted by Chien Khan’s cruelty, Umeko joins the Turtles. She and Raphael grow close, begin a romantic relationship, and eventually share life in the sewers.

Her family remains important to her. When her brother Naga reports that a hunter has captured their grandmother, they travel to an island to rescue her.

The Future Shark Trilogy gives Raphael an unusual source of relationship advice: his older self. The younger Raph worries about the differences between a reptile and a mammal. His future counterpart urges him not to let her go.

Those differences are only part of the problem. Both are intense, but Raphael’s negativity weighs on Umeko. Over time, she feels lost in the Turtles’ adventures, with her own needs and identity pushed into the background.

During a trip to Alaska, they meet the wolf man Mokoshan. Umeko is drawn to him. After she is shot while trying to protect wolves, he helps her recover, and Raphael reacts badly to their growing closeness.

Umeko ends the relationship, seeking a more stable direction for her life. The Archie series concludes before giving that new chapter the same room to develop as her time with the Turtles.

In 1996, she appears in stories in the adult-oriented anthology Furrlough, including issues #47, #48, and #52. These stories take her beyond the tone and audience of the TMNT adventures.

She has married Mokoshan and has a daughter, Moka, but is now a widow after a human sniper kills him. Leaving the wolf clan with her child, she heads toward Japan and works as a mercenary while seeking his killer. A token marked with a kanji symbol is her key clue.

The 2014 TMNT 30th Anniversary Special revisits the Archie universe in a short story. Its timeless approach brings back the familiar period in which Ninjara and Raphael are together, rather than treating it as a continuation of every later development.

IDW introduces another fox character, Alopex, who also becomes romantically involved with Raphael. The 2012 cartoon has its own Alopex. These are separate characters, even when their appearance or role invites comparison with Ninjara.

Ninjara makes a background appearance alongside Chien Khan in Shredder’s Revenge: Dimension Shellshock. In the survival-mode setting, their reactions change depending on whether the player succeeds or loses.

The 2012 Alopex is playable in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Legends. That is an appearance by Alopex herself, rather than Ninjara using a different identity.

Collectors have also seen an independent fox-warrior figure by Da Foot, offered under the name Silent Claw. It belongs to the world of small-run, fan-oriented collectibles and should not be confused with an officially licensed TMNT release.
