Who Is Tang Shen? Her Place in the Ninja Turtles’ Family

Tang Shen’s story changes across Mirage, the movies, the 2003 and 2012 cartoons, and IDW’s tale of the Turtles’ past lives.

Splinter raises and trains the four Ninja Turtles in many TMNT universes, becoming the father they know and love. But where does Tang Shen fit into that family? Her role changes across the comics and cartoons. In IDW’s story of reincarnation, she is the mother of the human sons who become the Turtles. The video and article explore her history across several versions.

Tang Shen first appeared in the original TMNT comic. She was married to the martial artist Hamato Yoshi, whose pet rat was Splinter. Oroku Nagi, the older brother of Oroku Saki—the future Shredder—also wanted to be with her.

Shen loved Yoshi. In a jealous rage, Nagi attacked her, setting off the confrontation in which Yoshi killed him.

Yoshi and Tang Shen moved to New York to start over, but Oroku Saki followed them. Seeking revenge for his brother, he murdered them both.

Splinter later told the Turtles about his owner and teacher, Hamato Yoshi. He may also have told them about Tang Shen: the rat and his owners had been a family before Saki destroyed their lives. That possibility is an interpretation rather than an event shown in that account.

The original comic helped shape the first live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. Tang Shen also appears briefly in the story Splinter tells April O’Neil about his past.

In the 2003 cartoon, Tang Shen is the adopted daughter of the Ancient One, the teacher who raised Hamato Yoshi and Mashimi. As in the original comic, Shen’s love for Yoshi drives a wedge between two men who want to be with her.

This version of Shen also dies because of the jealousy of Yoshi’s rival.

Nickelodeon’s animated series and the IDW comics give Tang Shen a more developed place in the story.

In the 2012 cartoon, Shen is a Japanese woman from Fukuoka with a Chinese grandfather. She marries Hamato Yoshi, and they have a daughter named Miwa.

A jealous Oroku Saki attacks Yoshi at the family’s home. Their fight ends with the house in flames.

Yoshi survives, but Tang Shen does not. Saki takes Miwa and raises her as his own daughter.

Saki then blames Yoshi for Shen’s death, even though he accidentally struck her when she tried to stop the two men from killing each other.

After losing his wife, Yoshi leaves Japan and moves to New York. His grief offers one way to interpret his later decision to buy four pet turtles: a lonely man finding a new family. The story does not establish that as his explicit reason for entering the pet store.

In this continuity, Shen is Miwa’s biological mother. Her connection to the four Turtles comes through Yoshi and the family he raises after her death. Calling her their mother in the same literal sense as IDW’s version would blur two different origin stories.

In the IDW comics, Tang Shen meets Hamato Yoshi near a river while he is trying to calm his anger. Her unexpected presence startles him, and he falls into the water.

They are drawn to each other, marry, and have four sons.

Oroku Saki resents Shen’s influence on Yoshi. When Yoshi openly criticizes his hunger for power and bloodshed, Saki sends Foot Clan members to kill Yoshi’s wife and children.

They attack Shen, but Yoshi returns in time to save their four sons from the same fate.

Before she dies, Shen urges Yoshi to take their children and run. She asks him to stay alive for them rather than confront Saki in revenge.

Yoshi keeps that promise and hides with his sons for eleven years. Eventually, Saki tracks them down and has all five killed.

After their reincarnation and mutation, Splinter tells the Turtles about their previous lives, including Tang Shen’s death.

Leonardo sometimes dreams of Shen and takes those encounters as confirmation of that past. When he is brainwashed and turned against his father and brothers as Dark Leonardo, her spirit appears in his dreams, trying to help him recover his sense of self and his memories.

While Leonardo is recovering in Northampton, she visits him again to help him work through his resentment toward his family. She also appears to Splinter and reassures him that he has not failed their son.

Shen also appears after Bebop and Rocksteady beat Donatello nearly to death. She offers guidance and reassures him that, whether he chooses to live or die, he will not face it alone.

She returns in the TMNT and Ghostbusters crossover, sharing her love and wisdom with the Turtles and thanking the Ghostbusters for helping them. As they leave, she asks her sons to pass her love on to their father.
