Chrome Dome is a towering robot built to serve Shredder and lead his Foot Soldiers. His size alone makes him intimidating. Add the weapons built into his body, and he becomes one of the Turtles’ most dangerous mechanical opponents.

He makes his cartoon debut in the 1987 series’ prime-time special “Planet of the Turtleoids,” first broadcast on August 31, 1991. Episode numbering varies between releases, so the special’s title is the clearest way to find it.
Shredder boasts that Chrome Dome is made of 99 percent adamantium, supposedly making him almost impossible to destroy.
Marvel readers will recognize that name: adamantium is the fictional metal associated with Wolverine’s skeleton and claws. The cartoon borrows a familiar comic-book term for its nearly indestructible robot; that does not establish a shared Marvel and TMNT universe.
The other one percent is ordinary metal. Shredder ran out of adamantium before finishing the job, leaving one vulnerable spot. Krang thinks the robot will remain unbeatable as long as nobody discovers it. Unfortunately for them, April O’Neil overhears the conversation.
Chrome Dome’s intruder alarm goes off almost as soon as he is activated, because April has escaped.
He supervises the Foot Soldiers as they build the Technodrome Mark II, a smaller version of the original. The Turtles destroy the machine and face its robotic overseer in a tough fight. April tells them about his weakness, allowing Donatello to strike the vulnerable spot and defeat him.
Chrome Dome returns in “Night of the Rogues,” joining a team of familiar villains assembled against the Turtles.
Splinter and Casey Jones defeat him with a hydraulic press. The scene echoes the ending of The Terminator, in which Sarah Connor crushes the machine pursuing her.
He does not appear in the 2003 animated series, but Nickelodeon brings him back in the 2012 show. His debut there comes in season two’s “Target: April O’Neil.”
The episode opens with Shredder reprimanding Karai for disobeying him. Before leaving for Japan, he orders her to stop dealing with the Kraang.
Karai ignores that instruction and visits a Kraang facility to inspect the giant robot she commissioned. The engineers say it still needs nine hours of work. She demands that they speed things up: she wants to test it against April immediately.
At this point, April is angry with the Turtles, whom she partly blames for her father’s transformation into a mutant bat.
Foot ninjas attack her while she is on her way to meet Casey Jones. April initially holds her own but notices that these opponents are stronger than the ones she has fought before. Casey soon joins the struggle.
Elsewhere, the Turtles follow a Kraang signal to a secret base. After taking down a pair of androids, they enter the facility and discover its mysterious new weapon: an enormous robotic ninja.
During the fight, Donatello receives April’s call for help and leaves to find her. His brothers stay behind. When the giant robot powers up, Michelangelo gives it the inevitable nickname: Chrome Dome. It overwhelms the three Turtles and flies off to pursue its real target, April.
Donatello and Karai are with April when Chrome Dome arrives. The other Turtles catch up and join the battle, but the machine has the advantage. Then they notice a vulnerable panel on its back.
The brothers distract Chrome Dome while Donatello climbs onto him and cuts the wires inside the panel. The damage sends the robot into a malfunction. Michelangelo takes its plasma weapon and delivers the finishing attack.
That is Chrome Dome’s main outing in the 2012 series. Later, season four introduces upgraded Foot robots whose heavy armor and weapons recall his design, although they are not simply the same individual returning.
Chrome Dome’s first Playmates action figure arrived in 1991. It was much smaller than his cartoon counterpart and came with fairly simple weapons, but that bright silver finish made it stand out.
NECA later produced a much larger figure based on the classic cartoon. Its scale, imposing silhouette, weapons, and accessories are much closer to the animated robot.
Super7 also released a smaller ReAction version, bringing the character into its retro-styled figure line.
The 2012 incarnation received a Minimates figure, packaged with Michelangelo.
Chrome Dome has also appeared in TMNT video games, including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Legends. His mobile-game appearances should not be confused with Mutant Mayhem, the title of the 2023 animated movie.
He is a boss in Wrath of the Mutants and Shredder’s Revenge. In the latter, throwing Foot Soldiers toward him recalls the memorable Shredder battle in Turtles in Time.
One of his most memorable playable appearances is in the NES version of Tournament Fighters. Here, he is closer to a robotic Shredder than a towering cartoon boss. His ending has him use his tournament winnings to obtain equipment that removes faulty programming, letting him settle into a peaceful life—and even find a girlfriend. A surprisingly sweet payoff for such an intimidating machine.
The comic series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Saturday Morning Adventures gives Chrome Dome an especially unlikely role: candidate for mayor of New York City.
During election season, he appears on television and challenges New York’s status as the pizza capital of the world. The Turtles are stunned. They thought they had already put him out of action for good.
Voters start responding to his campaign ideas. Suspicious, the Turtles investigate and discover that Professor McGuffin rebuilt him. The professor wanted to program the ideal mayor and turn the city into a utopia.
Unfortunately, Chrome Dome’s original evil instructions remain buried in his memory. They take over, and he attacks the professor and the Turtles. Once again, the heroes find themselves badly outmatched.
McGuffin has a remote control that can shut the robot down. Chrome Dome destroys it before anyone can use it, then leaves.
The Turtles discover that the remote’s main chip survived. They seek April’s help with a plan to get the chip into Chrome Dome before he can wreck the city.
He is close to winning the election when April finds a way to derail his campaign.
At a press conference, she challenges his eligibility by pointing out that he is not registered to vote. In the comic’s political farce, this is the objection that finally makes him lose control. He decides to take the city by force instead.
The Turtles attack with a plan inspired by Star Wars: tangle his legs, knock him over, and hold him down. Donatello installs the chip while his brothers keep the robot pinned, finally shutting him off.
Life returns to normal. The Turtles and Splinter finish the adventure back in the sewers, watching a movie about androids—an appropriately mechanical ending.
