Secret Wars refers to two major Marvel Comics events: the 1984 story that brings heroes and villains to the Beyonder’s Battleworld, and the 2015 story about the collapse of the multiverse and a world ruled by Doctor Doom. They share concepts and characters but tell different stories.

Avengers: Secret Wars also uses the title for a movie. Knowing the comics can help explain the source material; it does not confirm the plot of that film or Avengers: Doomsday.
Spoiler note: the opening sections cover the premises. A clearly marked section near the end discusses the ending of the 2015 comic.
Secret Wars 1984 vs. Secret Wars 2015
| Detail | 1984–1985 | 2015–2016 |
|---|---|---|
| Writer | Jim Shooter | Jonathan Hickman |
| Art | Primarily Mike Zeck, with Bob Layton | Esad Ribić |
| Core series | 12 issues | 9 issues |
| Starting point | A powerful entity assembles opposing groups | The multiverse approaches its end |
| Battleworld | A constructed arena for the conflict | A world made from remnants of realities |
| Prior reading | More approachable on its own | More context from Hickman’s Avengers and New Avengers |
The modern series is labeled 2015 even though publication finished in 2016. When choosing a collected edition, check the writer and issues included. The title alone does not identify which event you are buying.
What happens in the original Secret Wars?
The Beyonder brings heroes and villains to Battleworld and offers to fulfill their desires if they defeat their enemies. The cast brings together Avengers, X-Men, the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, and other major Marvel figures.
The premise makes it a large-scale crossover, but the sides are not simply two perfectly coordinated teams. Their competing priorities create conflicts within the groups as well as between them.
Doom is not content to obey the contest’s rules. His interest in taking power from the entity running the conflict makes the event an important part of his history.
Spider-Man’s black costume
One famous connection is Spider-Man’s black costume, which becomes part of the symbiote story and eventually Venom’s history. It illustrates how a crossover can leave consequences in individual characters’ books.
Using the Secret Wars title in a movie does not oblige an adaptation to retell that costume’s origin in exactly the same way.
What changes in Jonathan Hickman’s Secret Wars?
The modern event begins with a threat to the multiverse itself. Incursions bring realities into collision, culminating in a crisis involving the main Marvel Earth, Earth-616, and the Ultimate Universe’s Earth-1610.
The story then presents a Battleworld assembled from pieces of realities and ruled by Doom. It is a different dramatic setup from repeating the original contest.
A useful reading of the central conflict is that survival raises a second question: who gets to decide what the surviving world should be? Saving something and claiming absolute authority over it are not necessarily the same moral achievement.
The core narrative is Secret Wars #1–9. Stories set in its different domains expand the setting, but they do not replace that central series.
Incursions, Battleworld, the Beyonder, and Molecule Man
What is an incursion?
In the storyline leading to the 2015 event, an incursion is a collision between realities that threatens their universes. It is not simply another word for every portal or instance of time travel.
The MCU also uses the term, but its screen rules should be checked against the movies and shows themselves. A shared word does not establish identical causes, deadlines, or solutions.
What is Battleworld?
Broadly, it is a world pieced together from other places. In 1984 it is the setting created for the Beyonder’s conflict. In 2015 it is the world at the center of the post-catastrophe story.
Its regions may come from different realities. That is why a familiar-looking character does not necessarily share the entire biography of the version readers usually follow.
The Beyonder is not interchangeable with the Beyonders
The singular Beyonder is associated with the original event. The plural Beyonders play a role in Hickman’s multiversal story. Their publishing histories connect, but treating every mention as the same individual removes distinctions a reader needs.
Why Molecule Man matters
Owen Reece, the Molecule Man, is crucial to Doom’s relationship with the power sustaining the 2015 Battleworld. Understanding that dependence helps explain why Victor’s position rests on more than his personal will.
Marvel’s official Molecule Man profile explains his role, including spoilers for the event.
The easiest Secret Wars reading order
The short route
- Choose one version first; there is no need to alternate between them.
- For the classic story, read Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #1–12.
- For the modern story, read Secret Wars #1–9 (2015). You can follow the main narrative even if some background is unfamiliar.
- Then explore whichever character, team, or domain interested you most.
The fuller route into the 2015 event
Read Hickman’s Avengers, the series launched in 2012, and New Avengers, launched in 2013, using an edition or guide that interleaves their crossovers. They lead into Time Runs Out and then Secret Wars.
Check collected editions carefully. Marvel’s Secret Wars by Jonathan Hickman omnibus collects the final stretch of Avengers and New Avengers plus the event, rather than the entire earlier run.
Do I need every Battleworld tie-in?
No. Those books explore individual domains and characters. Start with the core series, then select extras. Treating all tie-ins as compulsory turns a manageable reading project into an unnecessarily large purchase list.
Secret Wars II is another work, not an alternate title for the 2015 miniseries. Secret War, singular, is also a different story. Those distinctions matter when searching catalogs.
How the 2015 comic ends — spoilers
This section discusses the published comic’s ending. The conclusion confronts Doom’s insistence that he was the only possible savior with Reed Richards’ capacity to use the power differently.
Molecule Man transfers the power supporting Doom’s rule to Reed. Rebuilding the multiverse replaces Battleworld’s order. The vast cosmic crisis also becomes a personal confrontation over whether Victor can acknowledge that Reed could do better.
That is the comic’s conclusion. It is not a confirmed scene-by-scene prediction of either Avengers film.
Why these comics matter before Doomsday
Doom, the Fantastic Four, and the multiverse make this material useful context. An adaptation can combine ideas, change participants, or use an image differently. Thematic connections do not establish a literal adaptation.
For announced movie details, see our Doomsday cast and release guide. To meet Victor before his exceptional power upgrades, begin with Doctor Doom’s origin.
