GTA 6 is not a remake of GTA: Vice City. It brings back the city’s name and recognizable coastal identity, but tells a different story centered on Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. The 2002 game follows Tommy Vercetti in 1986; GTA 6 presents a contemporary Vice City within the state of Leonida.
The easiest way to understand the connection is to separate three things: Vice City as a fictional place, GTA: Vice City as a specific game, and The Definitive Edition as an updated release of that older adventure. Sharing a setting does not make two games versions of the same story.

A new story, rather than Tommy’s adventure rebuilt
Rockstar’s official Vice City description frames the older game around a rise through the criminal world. Its identity is closely tied to Tommy Vercetti and its 1980s setting. GTA 6’s official premise follows Jason and Lucia after an easy score goes wrong and draws them into a criminal conspiracy across Leonida.
Those are different dramatic starting points. A remake would rebuild an earlier work; returning to its city with different leads and a different central conflict is a different proposition. Familiar imagery can invite comparison without repeating the plot.

The distinction also helps with character expectations. GTA 6’s story is not introduced as “what Tommy did next.” To understand its new cast, see our explanation of Jason, Lucia, and their connections in GTA 6.
From an ’80s city to contemporary Leonida
The classic’s period setting shapes its clothing, cars, music, and visual language. GTA 6’s official material instead uses smartphones and social media imagery to establish a contemporary context. Even when both games show neon and palm trees, the society around those images is different.
That is a more useful distinction than treating the new game as the old city with sharper textures. A time period changes how people communicate, how fame circulates, and what the city’s businesses and streets look like.

Leonida is the state; Vice City is one of its destinations. Rockstar also introduces the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga. The setting is therefore presented as more than a single urban area. Our GTA 6 real-life locations article explains its recognizable Florida references.
An older map should not be treated as a street-by-street plan of the new game. A repeated name or visual reference does not establish identical distances, road connections, or neighborhood boundaries.
Where does Vice City – The Definitive Edition fit?
Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition includes updated versions of GTA III, GTA: Vice City, and GTA: San Andreas. The Vice City installment in that collection still follows the classic adventure and its period setting.
If you want the older Tommy Vercetti story in an updated edition, that is the relevant title to distinguish from GTA 6. “Vice City” in a search result can mean the setting, the original release, or the trilogy installment; checking the full game title resolves much of the confusion.
Does returning to Vice City mean Tommy Vercetti returns?

A return to the city alone does not establish a character appearance. A reference to a name, outfit, or property can acknowledge an older game without placing that character in the new story. An explicit appearance and a callback are different kinds of evidence.
The clear comparison in Rockstar’s published premises is Tommy on one side and Jason and Lucia on the other. This article does not turn visual similarities or fan theories into a promised role for Tommy.
Do you need to play Vice City before GTA 6?
GTA 6’s published premise introduces its own leads and conflict. Based on that presentation, the older game offers historical context for the setting rather than a prerequisite Rockstar has identified for following the new story.
Playing it can make the return more interesting: you can compare how the city’s identity worked in an ’80s crime story with its contemporary reimagining. That is a reason to explore the series’ history, not a required sequence of missions.
The practical distinction: GTA 6 returns to Vice City with another story. Vice City – The Definitive Edition revisits the classic story. They are not interchangeable titles.
